This strategic session/article is an update to one given over 10 years ago at the 1994 NASIG Conference. From the publisher's and the subscription agent's view, journal pricing is described for both the traditional print and the electronic formats. The publisher's view includes what factors are considered when setting pricing. How the agent handles journal pricing is discussed in detail as well as the changes caused by the advent of the electronic journal. To complete the business picture, the agent's view shows how the service charges for libraries are calculated as part of the revenue stream for agents.

Librarians and subscription agents need to understand the issues surrounding the acquisition of electronic material. Pricing is generally not readily available on the Internet or on a publisher website. Customized quotations from the publishers are often required, and for "Big Deals," publisher sales managers get involved with license negotiations. Consortia are now a major presence in the negotiation of "Big Deals." In this workshop, the presenters discuss pricing options and issues for electronic serials.

The presenters described the complex nature of managing electronic resources and demonstrated how services offered by subscription agents may assist with this effort, particularly for managing e-journal packages. Using the University of Alabama's experiences with EBSCO Information Services as a case study, the presenters discussed specific advantages and disadvantages of using agents and going direct to the publisher. The session also described metamediaries in the context of the library-agent relationship.

When purchasing electronic journals, many libraries weigh the benefits of ordering direct, through a consortium, or through their subscription agent. Often, the role of the agent in the electronic environment is called into question. The agent's role may seem irrelevant if only the exchange of money is considered. However, when libraries consider the entire e-journal acquisitions process, from negotiation with the publisher to renewing subscriptions, the value of third-party assistance is realized. This paper discusses the tasks associated with the acquisition of electronic journals and the role of the agent in assisting the library with these tasks. It is based on a presentation given at the e-journal continuing education workshop held at Mississippi State University Libraries on May 21, 2004.

We quantify the impacts of journal governance (for-profit status, society affiliation, and publisher), quality (impact factor and citations), and costs on the institutional subscription prices of the core economics journals. Empirical results show that quality has a much smaller influence.

In the struggle to find sustainable business models, many local news sites have turned to engaged journalism, which draws from social exchange
theory and aims to build relationships with audiences. The causal impact of these initiatives is unclear, but important given that local
news sites are critical information sources and face dire economic situations. In this study, 20 news sites were randomly assigned to launch a
six-month engaged journalism initiative where journalists reported on audience questions or to continue their current practices. Although not a
panacea, over time traffic and subscription data and a two-wave survey of audience members across the sites (n¼3,998) show that the initiative
resulted in more subscriptions and more positive audience evaluations. The results highlight the applicability of social exchange theory to questions
of local news viability and illustrate that engaged journalism can improve relationships between newsrooms and the communities they
serve.

Open access repositories and Web 2.O-organized content on the one hand, author-pays and institution-pays business models on the other one might think that professionally published, subscription-based journals are obsolete. But there are still good reasons to organize academic publishing around journals that are published by professional publishers and sold to libraries. Representatives from two different journal publishers, Berkeley Electronic Press and Springer, discuss ways publishers are adapting to changes in the academic journal publishing market.

This study examines the impact of the Association of Commonwealth Universities-Protecting the African Library (ACU-PAL) scheme for the provision of journal subscriptions to libraries of developing economies, using the Ktvame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology library in Kumasi, Ghana as a case study. The history of the scheme is outlined and subscription outcomes between 2006 and 2009 are critically examined. The mode of selecting and ordering of the journals is also discussed. The scheme has been found to have met the core journal needs of faculty and students to a greater extent, and this success could be enhanced further if the challenges identified are addressed. Recommendations are made to improve on the scheme and advice is provided for non-participating members to take advantage of the scheme.
